The Right Tools for the Job

If you’ve ever played one of the many Mega Man games then you know that one of the key mechanics of that series is that each of the different robot bosses will give you their weapon upon being defeated. This is important because not only can these weapons be handy in getting through difficult parts of a level, but each weapon also serves as the weakness of one of the other robots.

This chart, found via a Google search, shows the “correct” order to fight the bosses of Mega Man 1. Sure, you can go through in any order you want and just use the regular Mega Buster weapon, but you’re going to have a much more difficult time in an already difficult game. However, if you follow the path laid out here you will go into each battle equipped with the exact weapon you need to easily defeat each boss. Bomb Man’s bombs do explosive damage to Guts Man. Guts Man’s rock throwing ability lets you literally chuck parts of the stage at Cut Man, and so on. You get the idea. The point is that when you make sure you have the right tool for the job, the job ahead of you becomes significantly easier.

We see numerous examples of this same concept in the Bible as well. While no one was fighting killer robots, they still had their own battles and challenges to confront. God knew they would need something to help them accomplish their tasks, so he provided them with exactly the thing they needed, whatever that thing was. Moses, for example, was afraid to go and speak to Pharaoh, so God sent his brother Aaron with him to speak for him. When the people of Israel needed to cross the sea to escape the pursuing Egyptians, God parted the waters so they could cross safely. David went to face Goliath with nothing more than a sling and some stones, but God guided his aim so that the mighty giant was slain. It doesn’t even have to be a physical need either. The Apostle Paul had to go through a dramatic spiritual transformation before he was ready to begin the ministry God had called him to. Jesus’ disciples received the Holy Spirit, empowering them to go out and begin spreading the Gospel message as well as perform miracles.

These are just a few examples. There are many, many more found in the pages of the Bible. In each case though, what they have in common is that God provided each person with whatever it was they needed to carry out the task he had given them. If he was willing and able to help them, why would you or I be any different today? The fact is God is still perfectly able to supply us with exactly what we need if we are willing to trust him and follow his lead. Then we can rest assured that when the time comes he will give us whatever tools and resources are necessary for us to accomplish what we have been called to do.
