Playstation VR2 Announced

A new year brings along new tech devices. PlayStation hits the ground running for 2022 announcing their new VR2 and VR2 Sense controller. Great news for VR enthusiasts as they promise,

a true next-gen experience with high-fidelity visuals, new sensory features, and enhanced tracking – along with a simplified single-cord setup.”

Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Experience

Sounds pretty good so far! But lets dive straight into the heart of what it offers, such as visual fidelity, headset-based controller tracking, brand new sensory features, and eye tracking. Let’s break that down a bit:

  • Visual Fidelity:
    • Promising impressive visuals, the VR2 offers an amazing 4k HDR, 110-degree field of view, and foveated rendering. VR2 users can expect smooth frame rates as high as 120Hz as well as 2000×2040 resolution per eye.
  • Headset-based Controller Tracking:
    • The PS VR2 offers tracking inside and out, tracking you and your controller through integrated cameras embedded in the headset. As a result of this, there is no need for external cameras as the movements you make and direction you look will be reflected in-game in a responsive manner.
  • New Sensory Features:
    • The PS VR2 offers a desirable feeling of immersion by using such combined technology as headset feedback, 3D audio, eye tracking, and the VR2 Sense controller. The headset feedback is a much desired feature for immersion that the PS VR lacked. The feedback is created by a single motor that add an “intelligent tactile element”. What this means is you can physically feel the movement of a vehicle and even the pulse of a video game character.
  • Eye Tracking:
    • Self explanatory really but to add some depth to it, the PS VR2 eye tracking feature offers an impressive immersion level by simply having a video game respond to your eye movements in a lifelike way, allowing for a more heightened emotional response to what’s going on around you in a video game.

What’s even more impressive is the small effort needed to setup the VR2 as they claim you will only need to plug a single cable into your PS5 for a quick jump into the immersive VR experience it offers. To make the reveal of the PS VR2 even sweeter is the exclusive title announced for it, Horizon: Call of the Mountain, which is in development with the functionality of the VR2 in mind. Now all that is impressive indeed, but what about backwards compatibility? We don’t have the answer to the question at the moment as no mention of such a hopeful feature has been made by PlayStation. Here’s hoping though! Below lists the specs of the PS VR2 in a more technical way:
