Infinite Life’s Mission Strategy – Koinonia (κοινωνία)

Therefore, if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, any fellowship in the Spirit … then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. (Philippians 2:1-2)

“It’s Greek to me” is a saying often derived from not comprehending something. It’s when something is as clear as mud to you. The idiom mainly comes from not understanding a different language and the complexities of that. The Bible was written in Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament). Our modern day translations do a good job at giving God’s word in English, but sometimes they do not capture the full meaning of a word such as “fellowship.”

If you are outside of the church, you may never hear or use the word “fellowship.” It’s used in the church quite a bit. But like Inigo Montoya in the Princess Bride said, “you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” I think “fellowship” is one of those words for the church that we have lost its deeper meaning. The Greek word for “fellowship” is Koinonia (koin-o-nia).

Koinoia is more than a meeting with food. In Philippians 2, koinonia has the meaning of “sharing which one has in anything.” It’s an action that goes beyond a potluck (a church meal where people bring a crockpot of food). It’s a sharing of what we have in common with Jesus and one another. For Infinite Life, our aim is to koinonia over games. There is something special that happens when you spike your friend to their doom in a game of Smash Bros, beat your friend’s fastest lap time in Mario Kart, or like me when I tried to finish Star Fox 64 with more confirmed kills than my brother. Good times!

The IL team’s mission is to introduce gamers to Jesus and to one another. That is why we exist. We are gamers who have accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross as our forgiveness of sin. So yes, we love Jesus and we enjoy playing games. Also, we love the gaming community and the excitement that comes form playing and talking about video games. We want Infinite Life to be a place where conversations on faith and games can co-exist and that we all can “be like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.” So if you are a gamer and you are looking for a community to connect with, then come on, let the adventure begin!
